Gecko Delivery is a locally-owned business, but more importantly, a service for the drastically underserved district of Puna that I have called home for most of my life.
I graduated from Pahoa High School in 2005, and then the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 2009. Throughout my college years I worked grocery retail in Pahoa, followed by remote work for a nationwide app-based delivery service. In early 2018, I used what I'd learned to launch Grocery Gecko, and began fulfilling orders in the community. Shortly after, an eruption began which brought everything to a halt. I was working in the Pahoa County Council office and became overwhelmed with helping the community. Grocery Gecko was shelved.
Nearly three years later, and more than six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Grocery Gecko has been revived as Gecko Delivery due to the growing need for this service. To reduce risk for our kupuna and immunocompromised, to support those in quarantine, and to relieve residents of the burden of those 'Hilo errands,' Gecko Delivery is here. Having experience working for a mainland delivery company and local knowledge of the Puna area, I'm able to create a model that provides for our needs. My whole life, I was told there will never be delivery in Puna. I say, CAN! It just has to be done in a way that is right for Puna.
